New developments in scrubber particulate control technology

Scrubbers are used throughout industry. They are used in mining operations, food production, chemical operations, primary and secondary metals industries, fabricated metals, incinerators and the entire gamut of industrial activities. Although no one industry dominates scrubber usage, heavy users include vehicle production (with foundries, plating and machinery) chemicals and steel. Scrubbers are used for odor control in sewage treatment plants, chemical plants, and food processing plants. The term ''scrubbers'' generally includes absorbers which are used for a variety of mass transfer requirements. The largest single use of scrubbers is for removal of SO/sub 2/ from utility power plant gases. As the largest single application, it is the application to which most of the research is directed, therefore many of the developments applicable to other scrubbing applications stem from research done for the utility industry. The use of scrubbers for particulate control is much smaller than for absorption. One reason is that scrubbers compete with fabric filters, cyclones and electrostatic precipitators on particulate control applications, whereas they are often the only option for absorption problems. Developments in scrubbers for particulate control have recently fallen into three categories: (1) basic equipment designed developments; (2) adaptation of existing designs to new applications; (3) improvements in auxiliaries and system components.
