The absorption coefficient, ..cap alpha.., of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ crystals was measured at 10.6 ..mu..m and correlated with growth parameters. The best result to date was ..cap alpha.. = 15.5 cm/sup -1/. An analysis of the intrinsic absorption of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ at 10.6 ..mu..m was made indicating a lower limit to ..cap alpha.. of 10/sup -4/ cm/sup -1/. Measurements of ..cap alpha.. vs. lambda in hot pressed disks of CdCr/sub 2/S/sub 4/ reveal that the most probable impurity affecting ..cap alpha.. at 10.6 ..mu..m is SO/sub 4/.
