Tunneling as a probe of nonequilibrium superconducting states

A scheme is designed to obtain information about the quasiparticle distribution in a superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnelling junction. It is shown that when both superconductors are in equilibrium states, the quasiparticle distribution is related to the I(V) characteristic by a linear integral equation. The effect of nonequilibrium distributions, which may be produced by microwave irradiation or phonons, on the I(V) characteristics is then discussed. It is concluded that the I(V) characteristics may be used to probe nonequilibrium states. 19 refs.
