These deposits, estimated to contain 60 billion tons of nahcolite and 27 billion tons of dawsonite, can be converted into various chemicals and oil. Nahcolite can be used to remove sulfur dioxide from stack gases (according to a government agency test, over 90 percent of the sulfur dioxide can be removed at a stoichiometric ratio of 1 : 1). Dawsonite yields sodium aluminate, used for precipitating phosphates in sewage and for water treatment. A chemicals/shale oil plant will yield more profit and cash flow than a shale oil plant. Estimates show that an oil shale mine and plant producing 100,000 tons/day of shale and 75,000 bbl/day of oil would cost $300 million in capital investment and earn $180,000/day in gross income. A 25,000 ton/day chemicals/shale oil plant producing 35 percent nahcolite, 10 percent sodium aluminate, and 20 gal/ton of oil at $10/ton, $40/ton, and $2.40/bbl, respectively, would yield $8.70/ton of throughput. The plant would cost $75 million and yield $217,500/day.
