The rare decays {ital Z}{r arrow}{ital VV} and {ital Z}{r arrow}{ital VP} are calculated in the framework of the nonrelativistic quarkonium model. The branching ratios are found to be small, around 10{sup {minus}12} for charmonium and 10{sup {minus}10} for bottomonium. An interesting feature of our result is the fact that for {ital Z}{r arrow}{ital VV} the longitudinal polarizations of the vector mesons contribute, meaning that the amplitude is nonvanishing as {ital m}{sub {ital V}}{r arrow}0, in contrast with Yang's theorem for photons.
