JTEC panel report on advanced computing in Japan. Executive summary

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7097372
The report examines the status and direction of Japanese technology in six areas related to advanced computing: electronic components, data storage, computer architecture, software, human interfaces, and supercomputers. The report is based on a review of the literature and a one week trip to Japan in November 1989 during which members of the Panel visited numerous Japanese laboratories and other computing facilities. The overall findings of the Panel suggest that advanced computing technology in Japan is equal to or ahead of that in the United States in the areas of electronic components, data storage, scientific calculations and supercomputers, as well as multimedia hardware. The U.S. is clearly ahead in computer architecture, software, and computer and human interfaces. Japan is gaining ground relative to the United States in all but one of those areas (human interfaces). The report concludes that Japan's position in advanced computing hardware will become dominant unless new initiatives are taken in the United States.
