More than 300 parties have agreed to complete the cleanup of the McKin hazardous waste site in Gray, Maine, under a consent decree lodged in federal court May 5. The McKin site, which is on the federal National Priorities List of the nation's worse sites, was a recycler and tank cleaner, which operated from 1963 to 1977. It handled waste oil, oil sludges, and chemical solvent wastes. The settling parties already have voluntarily conducted a substantial portion of the cleanup, including surface cleanup and soil treatment, costing about $6 million. They will conduct the remainder of the cleanup, including ground water treatment and monitoring. The settling parties also will reimburse the Environmental Protection Agency for $1.85 million and the State of Maine $1.15 million for previous costs at the site and for future oversight and administrative costs, under the agreement. The total cleanup is estimated at more than $12 million.
