Optical scanning apparatus for indicia imprinted about a cylindrical axis

An apparatus is described for optically scanning indicia imprinted about a cylindrical surface of an article comprising: a frame, a camera mounted on the frame, a light source for emitting a collimated light beam, a beam splitter mounted on the frame, means mounted on the frame for diffusing a portion of the light beam and reflecting a portion thereof onto the beam splitter. The beam splitter directs the light beam onto the cylindrical surface of the article for illuminating the indicia imprinted thereon. A means is included that consists of a metallic mirror surface for reflecting an image from the imprinted cylindrical surface for transmission through the beam splitter to the camera.
