Injury experience in coal mining, 1969. Information circular

Totals of 203 fatal and 9,917 nonfatal disabling work injuries occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.85 and 41.76 per million man-hours of worktime in the coal-mining industry of the U.S. during 1969. For all injuries, the severity rate was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours and the average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. There were no major disasters during the year. The injury data were classified by causes of injury-producing accidents, degree of injury, part of body injured, nature of injury, occupation of injured, time of injury occurrence, general work location within the operations, industry subgroups, States, and other analytical factors. The data were collected by mail on mandatory questionnaires from operating establishments in accord with the USA Standard Method of Recording and Measuring Work Injury Experience, Z16.1-1967, American National Standards Institue, and the Standard Industrial Classification, 1967, Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget.
