Evaluation of polymers for transformer applications

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7096546
Aging studies have been performed on polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, polyparabanic acid, polyethersulfone, and polyimide at 70, 110, 135, and 160/sup 0/C for times to 4000 h. Several types of tests were run on the aged materials to evaluate changes in mechanical and electrical properties. Polycarbonate showed evidence of degradation after aging at 110/sup 0/C and higher temperatures, polyethylene terephthalate began to degrade at 135/sup 0/C, and the other three polymers withstood 160/sup 0/C without detectable deterioration.
