Theoretical hydrogen sulfide oxidation reactions are reviewed. Stoichiometric requirements were determined for typical waste water samples. To oxidize 1 g of sulfide in laboratory conditions 2.4, 4.2, and 11.8 g of hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, and potassium permanganate, respectively, were required. First-order kinetics with linear sulfide generation describe the hydrogen sulfide oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. The kinetic constants for sulfide oxidation and in vitro generation are 0.120 min/sup -1/ and 0.38 mg/L x h. Chlorine compound and potassium permanganate oxidation reactions are complete in less than 5 minutes contact time.
