Appliance rebates: more than a free ride

Rebates towards the purchase of energy-efficient appliances are the trendiest conservation incentives. Because they are so popular - and their success so varied - the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and the Consumer Energy Council of America have prepared a report summarizing rebate programs at 132 public and private US utilities. Of the 132 utilities that responded to the survey, 59 had working rebate programs in place, a myriad mix of incentives labeled by one utility manager as a grab bag of tricks, games and gimmicks. The report contains detailed responses about the rebate programs at each utility. In addition, it summarizes the types and dollar amounts of rebates offered and provides valuable insights for both consumers and utilities on how to get the greatest savings from rebate programs.
