Synthesis of peri-substituted naphthalenes and tetralins

Synthesis of 1-ethyl-8-methylnaphthalene and 1-isopropyl-8-methylnaphthalene along with several 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro derivatives is described. The difficulties encountered in the synthesis and purification of these peri-substituted hydrocarbpms are discussed.
