A sulfonate surfactant (TRS 12B Petronate) was used in microemulsion floods for secondary oil recovery experiments. Kerosene, water, sodium chloride and isopropane alcohol (cosurfactant) were also present in the surfactant solutions. Linear and five-spot models of sand packs and consolidated sandstone cores were filled with kerosene or oil before flooding with the surfactant solution and thickened water. The composition of the thickened water was an aqueous solution of Enjay Biopolymer 9700 with 10 percent sodium chloride. A maximum of 10 percent pore volume surfactant slug followed by thickened water displaced essentially all the oil from a five-spot consolidated sandstone model.
