The US government provides most of the $800 million a year spent in Tennessee on research and development, with the private sector contributing an estimated $180 million. New governmental policies to encourage spin-offs from the research laboratories located in Kingston, Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Tullahoma and to attract new high-technology industry recognize the economic benefits of research activities that promote innovation and the transfer of technology to the commercial sector. Recent legislation sets the stage to ease patent grants, stimulate financing for research and commercialization, and to foster an entrepreneurial approach. East Tennessee already has the ingredients necessary for a Technology Corridor in the unique combinations of the University of Tennessee, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
