Evidence for deformation effect on the giant monopole resonance

The giant monopole resonance in the region of deformed nuclei has been investigated by inelastic scattering of 108.5 MeV /sup 3/He at very small scattering angles. Evidence is reported for coupling between the giant monopole and giant quadrupole vibrations, based both on energy shift and transition strength.
