Processing of the benzene-toluene fraction by extractive rectification

Investigation of the transformation undergone by the components of the crude-benzole BTX fraction in sulfuric-acid purification made it possible to conclude that it is expedient to process the BT, narrow benzene, and narrow toluene fractions separately to produce high-purity benzene and toluene. Such processing increases the pure-product yield by reducing the losses of aromatic C/sub 7/-C/sub 9/ compounds and other BTX-fraction components, including thiophene. Processing of narrow fractions is most promising for the production of higher product grades under centralized conditions, since it permits selection of optimum regimes for all technological stages, ranging from chemical purification to physico-chemical separation methods; losses of benzene homologs with production wastes are eliminated and better utilization of the feedstock to be processed (containing C/sub 6/-C/sub 9/ aromatics, styrene, and sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds of the thiophene series) is possible.
