The high efficiency of harmonic generation from its near-infrared fundamental frequency makes the neodymium-yag laser a valuable source of visible and ultraviolet radiation as well. Third-harmonic systems are less common than those for generating the second or fourth harmonic, largely because of their greater complexity. The 355-nanometer third harmonic is more valuable for some applications, however, including laser-Raman spectroscopy, photochemistry, atmospheric studies, highspeed near-ultraviolet photography and pumping short-wave-length dye lasers. The article describes ways to increase the efficiency of third-harmonic generation.
