Mode of transition from Hagg iron carbide to cementite. [Fe/sub 2/C. -->. Fe/sub 3/C]

The reaction of Haegg carbide, Fe/sub 2/C, to yield cementite, Fe/sub 2/C, and free carbon is a discontinuous or heterogeneous precipitation. Haegg carbide and cementite have narrow ranges of composition and apparently do not form intermediate metastable solid solutions. The reaction 3Fe/sub 2/C--Haegg ..-->.. 2Fe/sub 3/C + C becomes appreciable only at about 450/sup 0/, while the reaction Fe/sub 2/C--Haegg + Fe ..-->.. Fe/sub 3/C starts below 300/sup 0/. The ''unstable'' or ''labile'' carbide of Koelbel and co-workers is simply Haegg carbide.
