Static and fatigue notch strength prediction in alumina fiber reinforced aluminum plates with a circular hole
Predictions of the tensile notch strength and endurance limit of unidirectional FP/Al plates with circular holes are evaluated. The predictions were based on the average stress model introduced by Nuismer and Whitney (1974). The calculated values of the tensile notch strengths agreed with experimentally determined data. Calculated values of the endurance limits were conservative by 24 and 19.6 percent of the experimentally determined values. The endurance limits, determined from specimens 15.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 0.25 cm and with 9.5 and 4.8 mm dia. holes, were 179 MPa and 207 MPa, respectively. It was found that the endurance limit of FP/Al plates depends on the ratio of the amplitudes of the minimum and maximum cyclic stresses. 10 references.
