Mixed-media filtration of oily wastewaters
This paper deals with the development of mixed-media filtration and its application to oily wastes including oil-field produced water, refinery wastewater, and other waters containing oil. Several case histories are presented. The data show that simple filtration through the mixed-media filters can remove essentially all visible oil. Design and application criteria are provided. Filtration through granular materials to achieve removal of suspended matter and associated materials such as oil is an old concept. However, it is receiving new attention in many areas in the petroleum industry in improving the quality of injection waters in secondary recovery operations and to reduce the BOD, oil, and suspended solids levels in refinery wastewaters.
