This patent describes a process for the production of gaseous mixtures. The mixtures comprise H{sub 2} + CO by the partial oxidation of a fuel feedstock comprising sulfur-containing heavy liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel and/or solid carbonaceous fuel. The fuels having nickel, vanadium, and silicon-containing ashes, and the feedstock includes a minimum of about 0.5 ppm to 4,000 ppm of nickel, a minimum of about 0.2 wt. % of sulfur, bout 1.0 ppm to 2000 ppm of vanadium, and about 5 ppm to 10,000 ppm silicon.
