Phase balancing of single phase loads on induction furnaces

Journal Article · · Ind. Heat. (Pittsburgh); (United States)

For a relatively narrow range of load power factors, the tapped reactor circuit provides correction to a balanced three-phase load with lesser ratings of capacitor and reactor than the Steinmetz circuit employs. However, if the inherent power factor of the load is less than 0.866, or if the three-phase system is to be corrected to power factors greater than 0.866, the tapped reactor circuit is not as equipment efficient, requiring more capacitor kVAC and more reactor kVAR. When the circuit is applied, however, it is important to employ a delta-wye step-down transformer to limit any line unbalance that may arise as the load level shifts.
