Technical feature:The development of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) technology in the U.K. during the 1960's and beyond is reported. FBC technology was developed to reduce the capital costs of coal combustion and to facilitate the efficient use of lower grade coal. The status of operating FBC boilers in the U.K. is examined. FBC technology has the potential for clean, efficient burning of coal in applications ranging from heating to electricity generation. (3 diagrams, 4 photos, 3 references)
