A brief review of recent development and trends is presented. A careful projection of probable load growth, together with right-of-way limitations, indicates the probable need for 1000/1100 kV for short transmission distances (150 to 400 miles). This new voltage level will meet U. S. transmission needs up to and beyond the year 2000.
