Natural gas in 1985: an FPC scenario

The Federal Power Commission (FPC) has used a Chase Econometric computer model to project a 1985 natural gas distribution scenario. The model assumes that unless natural gas is entirely eliminated from industrial use in key states like Michigan and Massachusetts, there will be a 31 percent shortfall for industry nationally. A survey of what local utilities and pipeline companies estimate for 1985 is used as the supply assumption. The FPC's final assumptions show a decline in supply from 18.9 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in 1975 to 16.0 of 16.1 Tcf in 1985. Predictions for individual states are based on current economic and population trends and regulatory priorities. National projections show a five percent increase in demand and a nearly 3.4 Tcf foot shortfall. (DCK)
