Pollution prevention research at EPA's Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory: Cleaner production processes and cleaner products for a cleaner environment

EPA's Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory (RREL) in Cincinnati, Ohio, has since 1988 supported a program to encourage the development, demonstration, and adoption of environmentally cleaner products and cleaner production processes. To date, some $8 million has been expended in various elements of the program. In this paper, the author highlights some achievements of the program, discusses current activities and projects, and offers some observations about where the RREL Pollution Prevention Program, and the pollution prevention movement in general, appears to be heading.
