Rechargeable battery cells. [liquid metal anode, separate electrolytes for anode and cathode]
Patent
·
OSTI ID:7087388
A battery cell comprises a liquid metallic anode, two separate bodies of electrolytic solution, and a cathode. The first body of electrolytic solution has a cation selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and is in contact with the anode. The second body of electrolytic solution has an anion selected from the group consisting of bromine and iodine. Means separating the two bodies of solution include a diaphragm which is permeable to the anions and cations but substantially impermeable to molecular bromine and iodine. The cathode, immersed in the second body of solution, is nonreactive with the anion.
