The real threat of technology to human survival may be its failure to deal with the psychological, cultural, and social needs that are grounded in ancient human history and have not evolved with technological changes. Intelligence gave mankind power over the environment, but the relationship of the human and natural environment remains unchanged and makes it difficult for modern man to cope with the successes of modern technology. How man adapts to the threats of a man-made world and its unexpected side effects will determine whether the human species survives. By studying how the human mind is programmed and learning how environmental data are analyzed and synthesized into decisions, it should be possible to recreate the kind of surroundings in which people can react rationally. 198 references.
