An improvement of only 1% in efficiency for a large utility unit can result in savings of $100,000 to $800,000 per year. This fact, combined with the increased regulatory pressures of recent years for improved efficiency, competition from independent power producers, and new developments in computer and I and C technology has created considerable interest in computerized performance monitoring systems. This paper describes such a system for fossil power plants, the Fossil Thermal Performance Advisor (FTPA). FTPA is an on-line performance monitoring and expert system advisor that interfaces with existing plant computer systems to provide operating personnel with capabilities not available in existing equipment.
