Polarization observables in. pi. d-italic-arrow-right elastic scattering: Analyzing powers T/sub 20/ and tau/sub 21/

The tensor analyzing power T/sub 20/ and the composite observable tau/sub 21/equivalentT/sub 21/+(1/2(T/sub 22/ +T/sub 20//..sqrt..6 ) were measured at incident pion energies of 256 and 294 MeV, in an angular range between 90/sup 0/ and 172/sup 0/, using a tensor-polarized deuteron target. The experimental procedure and data analysis techniques are discussed extensively. Comparisons are made with predictions from different three-body theories.
