Microemulsions have (since their introduction by Schulman) been considered as true emulsions with different properties from micellar solutions, although their thermodynamic stability as been pointed out with some exceptions. Recently, it has been shown that microemulsions with compositions according to Schulman could be prepared commencing with pure hydrocarbon liquid followed by dissolution of the emulsifiers and water without any phase transition being observed. With this fact in mind, it is reasonable to accept a definition of the microemulsions as being micellar systems with a high ratio of the solubilized compound present. The question of a one- or 2-phase system falls back on the general discussion on the number of phases in a micellar solution. Diagrams are presented which illustrate the dependence of the solubilization capacity on proper ratios between the components. (14 refs.)
