Non-differential drive axle
This patent describes a drive axle for a vehicle, the vehicle having a set of wheels spaced along a first axis of rotation of the wheels, the drive axle comprising: a housing adapted to extend generally along the first axis between the two wheels, the housing first and second axially spaced ends, a gear support rotatably journalled in the housing adjacent the first end of the housing, an intermediate shaft drivingly connected to the gear support and rotatably journalled in the housing adjacent the second end of the housing, a first output shaft rotatably journalled in the first end of the housing and the gear support, a second output shaft rotatably journalled in the second end of the housing and the intermediate shaft, and a first bi-directional overrunning clutch positioned adjacent the first end of the housing and operable to connect the first output shaft with the gear support for conjoint rotation. The first overrunning clutch includes a first non-circular surface on the gear support, a first drum connected to the first output shaft and overlying the first non-circular surface, and rollers disposed between the first drum and the first non-circular surface actuatable to connect the first drum and the first non-circular surface for conjoint rotation.
