Deep drilling came back to the real world in 1983 after having soared to an all-time high during 1982 in defiance of that year's record drop in U.S. rotary rig activity. Last year's total of 577 wells drilled to 15,000 ft or deeper in the U.S. represents a 52% decline from the previous year's total of 1,205 deep completions. It is the sharpest drop in the history of deep drilling, and the 628-well difference between 1982 and 1983 would be a higher total than for any year but the previous 3 in the 40-year history of Petroleum Engineer International's computerized Deep Well Report. Nevertheless, the 577 deep completions put 1983 in sixth place on the all-time high list. The bad news is that they brought to an end a string of 7 consecutive years in which U.S. deep well completions had risen steadily. Completions, for the purposes of the Annual Deep Well Report, are defined as wells that reach total depth of 15,000 ft or more during the year, regardless of whether production equipment has been installed. Some of the wells listed as dry holes, therefore, are still being tested as of this writing. As a result, their classifications could change when final test results are in.
