This patent describes a method for increasing the hydrocarbon sorption capacity of a fresh as-synthesized zeolite having a silica to alumina molar ratio of at least 12, a constraint index ranging between about 1 and 12 and an alkali metal content less than about 1000 ppm. It comprises treating the zeolite by calcining to substantially remove organic obstructions within the zeolite pores and contacting the treated zeolite with a liquid solution consisting of aqueous ammonia having a pH between about 10.5 and about 14 at a temperature between about 25{sup 0} to about 110{sup 0}C. for about 2 to about 200 hours, wherein the zeolite is steamed prior to the contacting.
