Use of circular dichroism in obtaining unidirectional lasing in ring lasers

This article discusses the possibility of using natural and magnetic circular dichroism to obtain unidirectional lasing in ring lasers. The advantages of this method over the method employing circular phase anisotropy are indicated. In an He--Ne ring laser at lambda = 1.15 ..mu..m with a triangular cavity and an absorption cell, a practically completely unidirectional lasing was obtained. A ratio of the intensities of oppositely traveling waves of 8 x 10/sup 3/ and up to a twofold increase in radiated power in a given direction were obtained. It is noted that circular dichroism can be used to obtain bidirectional lasing with a continuously adjustable ratio of intensities and that such a laser can be used in spectroscopy.
