Operating U.S. waste-to-energy facilities have a combined solid-waste incineration capacity exceeding 200,000 tons per day. In 1988, 31 new WTE plants added 20,000 TPD of capacity. Surprisingly, the most popular solid waste fuel, by number of plants, is not municipal waste but wood waste. These are among the observations drawn from Solid Waste Power's data base of solid-waste-fueled facilities. The information was gathered over several months in late 1988 from a wide range of sources, including state and regional agencies. The investigations revealed that, with nearly 500 facilities operating and 90 plants planned or under construction, the solid waste-to-energy business is well-established and growing. 2 figs., 1 tab.
