Correlated electron precipitation and magnetic IPDP events near the plasmapause

Pulsation magnetometer and riometer data from the Finnish north-south chain ranging from L=3.3 to L=6.0 are used to study simultaneous IPDP (intervals of pulsations of diminishing period) and strong absorption events and especially their latitudinal distribution. Such events occur during magnetic storms mostly at L=3.7--4.8 in the plasmapause region on the evening side of the auroral zone and can be very localized in latitude. Two examples are presented in detail to demonstrate that the maxima of both pulsation and absorption amplitudes are observed at the same station and that they shift together equatorward in the course of events. The highest wave frequency during each event is found to depend strongly on the L shell of the maximum absorption. As an interpretation of the correlated absorption and pulsation events it is suggested that drifting protons stimulate instabilities to precipitate energetic electrons, for example, by the parasitic interaction between ion cyclotron waves and high-energy electrons in the magnetosphere.
