Quasidiatomic study of Ly-. cap alpha. --producing H/sub 2/ /sup +/-Ne collisions at keV energies

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
Coincidence measurements between H, H/sup +/, and the Ly-..cap alpha.. radiation from the decay of H(2p) resulting from the collision of low-keV H/sub 2/ /sup +/ projectiles with a Ne target have been made. Our results show that the direct excitation of H/sub 2/ /sup +/ with subsequent dissociation is a much more likely process than the electron charge transfer to (H/sub 2/)/sup */ followed by dissociation. The additional measurements of the polarization of the Ly-..cap alpha.. radiation in coincidence with the scattered H/sup +/ show that sigma states are more populated at H/sub 2/ /sup +/ orientations perpendicular to the beam. Our findings are interpreted within the quasidiatomic description of H/sub 2/-Ne molecular orbitals.
