Heads are one of the important accessories to pressure vessels and heat exchangers. The ends of the vessels are closed by means of the heads before putting them into operation. The common types in use are ellipsoidal, spherically dished (torispherical), and flat head. Ellipsoidal heads are used in vessels operating at high pressures. These also have a better natural geometry to withstand pressure. If the ratio of the major to minor axes is 2:1, they are called 2:1 ellipsoidal heads and are the most widely used.
