Radiation-induced DNA single-strand breaks were studied using preheated cultured mouse leukemic cells, L5178Y, exposed to /sup 60/Co ..gamma.. rays under N/sub 2/- and N/sub 2/O-saturated conditions. The yields of DNA strand breaks of cells preheated above 50/sup 0/C for 10 min were higher in N/sub 2/O-saturated than N/sub 2/-saturated suspensions, and the maximum N/sub 2/O/N/sub 2/ DNA strand breaks ratio was about 1.6. These results indicated that OH radicals were mainly responsible for the production of DNA strand breaks.
