A study was conducted to determine if nitriding will occur in stainless steel reactor components and fuel cladding. It was found that some nitriding of the reactor components at and above the sodium-argon interface will occur under service conditions, but that the depth of the nitride case (approximately 0.035 in.) will not be large enough to be detrimental to material properties. It was also determined that the fuel cladding and components below the sodium-argon interface will not be subject to nitriding. A recommendation is made that the nitrogen content of the primary system cover gases be limited to ≤vol %.
