Thermal scattering cross sections of /sup 233/U and /sup 232/Th (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7074905
Scattering cross sections were measured for /sup 233/U and /sup 232/Th metal samples in a moderated spectrum from a 5-milligram /sup 252/Cf source. The scattered neutrons were detected by two /sup 3/He detectors in an annular geometry. The experimental data were corrected for thermal and epithermal fissions, epithermal scattering, air scattering, room background, and self-absorption. The self-absorption corrections for the four /sup 233/U targets, covering a wide range in thickness, were obtained from Monte Carlo calculations. Corrections for the two /sup 232/Th targets used were obtained experimentally. The results obtained were 12.30 +- 0.70 barns for /sup 233/U and 12.78 +- 0.30 barns for /sup 232/Th, relative to vanadium with an assumed scattering cross section of 5.02 +- 0.10 barns. The corresponding values in the ENDF/B-III file are 14.06 and 11.82 barns, respectively. 9 figures, 5 tables. (NSA 30: 1668)
