Based on Shell Oil Co.'s Mississippi experience, development and availability of the following supplies and technology will facilitate expanded, economical development of deep, sour-gas wells in the U.S. and elsewhere: additional suppliers of thick-wall sulfide-stress-cracking-resistant casing and SSC-resistant tubing; higher strength SSC-resistant casing and tubing, high-strength corrosion-resistant tubing; inhibitors and carrier oils that are less soluble in the produced fluids and provide corrosion protection at flowing bottom-hole conditions; wireline equipment that can withstand the sour gas, temperatures, pressures, and depths of future super-deep wells; high-weight completion and workover fluids with better solids-suspension characteristics, low solubility in produced fluids, and stability in acid-gas environments; phase-behavior studies at high-pressure and temperature of simulated reservoir fluids containing free sulfur; and more extensive training for all concerned as to the hazards effects of hydrogen sulfide on materials and life.
