Steam power plants are among the largest users of fresh water. Therefore, the use of treated municipal water is of great importance. One of the primary factors to be considered in determining the feasibility of using municipal water at a thermal power plant is the rate of corrosion. The water leaving the municipal treatment plant differs from naturally occurring water in that it contains active chlorine, suspended matter, organic substances, and ammonia as well as other substances which affect the corrosiveness of the water. The corrosion of power plant components by municipally treated water is discussed.
