The photophysical properties of three cyclometalated bis([mu]-chloro)tetrakis(2-(4-R[prime]-phenyl)-5-R-pyridinato)diiridium(III) complexes are reported. The R = R[prime] = H complex is a strong photoreducing agent. The R = NO[sub 2], R[prime] = H complex is a strong photooxidant. With the NO[sub 2] group on the phenyl ring (R = H, R[prime] = NO[sub 2]), the complex displays intermediate photoredox properties and can act as a moderately photooxidizing or photoreducing agent.
