New transition metal phosphates related to KTiOPO[sub 4]. Synthesis of K[sub 0. 5]M[sub 0. 5]M[prime][sub 0. 5]OPO[sub 4] (M = Nb, Ta; M[prime] = Ti, V) and K[sub 1-x]Ti[sub 1-x]V[sub x]OPO[sub 4] exhibiting nonlinear optical behavior

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (United States)
Several transition metal phosphates of the general formula KM[sub 0.5]M[prime][sub 0.5]OPO[sub 4], where M = Nb[sup V] or Ta[sup V] and M[prime] = Ti[sup III], V[sup III], Cr[sup III], Fe[sup III], possessing the KTiOPO[sub 4] (KTP) structure have been synthesized. Unlike KTP, none of these phosphates exhibit second harmonic generation (SHG) of the 1064-nm radiation. Soft-chemical oxidation of the Ti[sup III] and V[sup III] phosphates using chlorine in CHCl[sub 3], however, restores the SHG property to the oxidized materials, K[sub 0.5]M[sub 0.5]M[prime][sub 0.5]OPO[sub 4] (M = Nb[sup V], Ta[sup V]; M[prime] = Ti[sup IV], V[sup IV]). K[sub 1-x]Ti[sub 1-x]V[sub x]OPO[sub 4] (x [le] 0.25) prepared similarly from KTi[sub 1-x]V[sub x]OPO[sub 4] also exhibit SHG. The results reveal that exclusive presence of d[sup 0] cations at the Ti[sup IV] site preserves the SHG response of KTP derivatives.
