The advent of the automated factory has resulted in an overwhelming amount of information and expertise required by factory maintenance personnel. To meet this need, a knowledge base was constructed to provide information on a particular system. It incorporates manufacturers' manuals, detailed procedural instruction, still-frame video pictures, and inference engine rules. This knowledge base was created and used with the aid of an object-oriented authoring system developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Experience gained from the initial implementation is discussed in relation to construction of knowledge bases in general. 6 refs., 4 figs.
