Yttrium and lutetium methyl complexes readily react with rhenium hydride compounds to eliminate methane and form heterometallic polyhydride complexes. The complexes (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]LnMe(THF) (Ln = Y, Lu) react with ReH[sub 7](PPh[sub 3])[sub 2] and ReH[sub 5](PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 3] to form (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]Ln(THF)H[sub 6]Re(PPh[sub 3])[sub 2] and (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]Ln(THF)H[sub 4]Re(PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 3]. Both 1 and 2 exist as molecular species containing bridging hydride ligands. In each case, the geometry around each metal resembles that in analogous monometallic systems with some distortions arising from steric crowding. The complexes (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]LnMe(THF) (Ln = Y, Lu) also react with Re[sub 2]H[sub 8](PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 4] in THF to form (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]Y(THF)H[sub 7]Re[sub 2](PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 4], 3, and (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]LuH[sub 7]Re[sub 2](PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 4], 4. Complex 3 is a fluxional molecule which contains an open L-shaped YRe[sub 2] unit. Complex 4 contains a closed triangular LuRe[sub 2] core which will not add THF. THF can be removed from 3 to form an yttrium analog of 4. The bimetallic complex 1 is unreactive toward CO, CO[sub 2], and PhC[triple bond]CPh but is highly reactive toward olefin polymerization. In contrast, the trimetallic complexes (C[sub 5]H[sub 5])[sub 2]LnH[sub 7]Re[sub 2](PMe[sub 2]Ph)[sub 4] are reactive toward CO and CO[sub 2] but unreactive with ethylene. 40 refs., 6 figs., 5 tabs.
