Container for liquefied gas

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7068989
A new West German approach, suitable for either above-ground or cargo tanks for LNG storage, uses a dual-purpose vapor-tight sealing layer to cover the inside walls of a cryogenic container made of reinforced or prestressed concrete with a reinforcement of steel. Heat-insulating layers of closed-cell synthetic-resin foam are applied to the sealing layer. The seal prevents moisture from passing from the warm outside to the cold inside of the container and also the liquefied gas from escaping from the container. It further enables a gas pressure to build up in the heat-insulating layer, maintaining the equilibrium of the liquefied gas. Holes of 1-mm diameter provided in the areas of the heat insulation (which can become wet) facilitate the buildup of this gas pressure.
